Dramatic Rescue off North Carolina Coast: 2007

From the Coast Guard archives. I'm at the NC coast in the middle of tropical storm Beryl going through old vids, and find this amazing footage! Look for the life raft in the monster waves!

070507-G-0000S-001 Rescue of 3 people 120 miles from N.C.

On May 7, 2007, the Coast Guard rescued nine people from three seperate sailboats in the wake of Subtropical Storm Andrea off North Carolina. This video shows the rescue of three men off the raft of the sunken 44-foot sailboat Sean Seamour II approximately 120 miles from shore. On Feb. 4, 2010, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Drew Dazzo is to receive Canada’s second-highest decoration for bravery for rescuing the Ottawa sailor and his crewmates from the raft. Dazzo is among nearly 50 recipients to be honoured by Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean at Rideau Hall. Dazzo is to receive the Star of Courage, awarded for “acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril,” according to the Vancouver Sun. Rescued from the raft were Rudy Snel, 62, and his European crew mates, Jean Pierre de Lutz, 58, and Ben Tye, 31. (U.S. Coast Guard video by Lt. Cmdr. Nevada Smith)

  • Wow. Brings back memories. They rescued three BUT there was four people. Yep, you guessed it. . I was the fourth. I told them "thanks but I'm gonna swim back." I beat them back to N.C.

  • Coast Guard are seriously underappreciated...while most of us in the military are at war or training for war the Coast Guard is deployed every day nomatter what. They deal with Homeland security,Non-homeland security, Search and rescue missions, and even get deployed to warzones (hung out with many of them in Iraq)yet most people just see them as glorified marine cops.

They deserve as much respect as any other branch of our military.

  • Consumate professionals that do their job very, very well. These people live and breath the words "Semper Paratus" . Imagine for a minute, what these crew-members go through to do this very demanding job. To me, the guy's in the helo have it pretty damn good compared to the rescue swimmer down in them fkn waves, what? 20 - 25 footers? Our country is truly blessed with heroes from all branches of the armed services and they all do their jobs very well and it is absolutely imperative we More..
