17-Year Old Boxer Collapses And Dies After Bout
Teenage boxer Tubagus Sakti collapses after losing by TKO to Ical Tobida in the eighth round of a bout for the KTPI junior flyweight title in Jakarta. He was rushed to the hospital and later died of a brain hemorrhage.
The TKO happens at 1:24, showing Sakti raising his hands to signal that he has stopped fighting but getting punched by Tobida several times before the referee could stop the match. The rest of the video shows Sakti being treated while spectators watch.

Report states he died from a Brain Hemorrhage. My guess would be the punch at about 1:10 which rattled him, but it could be any punch before that also.

Who the hell would have thought that two dudes punching each other in the head over and over again as hard as they can could ever possibly prove fatal?

@Aussie all boxers should, but they don't, because it makes the fights less interesting, thus less gambling.

@Aussie I dont believe that it happened because of the punches on his head, in the replay they show how he punches him in the kidney, I think that was the trigger

@Aussie yes, boxing should be done with head protection (even for adults) - soft gloves are also dangerous (too many hits in the head without/before losing consciousness)

@Aussie I think head protection wouldn't have saved him. He knew something wasn't right before he received his last punches, probably something from within his own body.

@jakethemuss This is more like one of those football players that collapse right on the field. Their heart is already weak and because they run they trigger a reaction resulting in a cardiac arrest. Head protection probably wouldn't have saved this poor guy. I'm a pretty high level kickboxer myself, headgear doesn't do that much really. Probably something was already wrong before he started the fight.

@Kotszak
It's nothing like that whatsoever.
It's the classic worst case brain injury in a sport like boxing.
Think Nigel Benn vs Gerald McClellan.
Those of us who have boxed or take part in combat sports like to kid ourselves otherwise, but these things happen. Getting punched in the face with or without headgear results in the brain rattling about inside the skull, that causes damage to the tissue.
In severe cases, like this poor lad, it can result in a bleed inside the skull, w More..

@bobbymanc If I punch you in the face while you are wearing leather head gear, your brain will still bounce around inside your skull, trust me. Boxing and MMA are not dangerous, in fact, it are sports that have a very low injury rate.

He probably felt a blood vessel pop in his brain and it started to swell. The first combination after he signaled he is giving up I can understand, but the last two punches before the ref finally jumps in were unnecessary. Not saying THAT's what killed him but he was pretty much punching a dead guy. Just saying.

this is why real boxing associations demand cranial x-rays for boxers. All you need an a bad artery to explode and you are dead.

@Penguinister Arteries never "exploded." The signal from his brain to his vital organs failed and he died from lack of oxygen.

Aneurysms can burst, which could be the explanation for his death.
I'm pretty certain he had a bleed of some sort, he didn't die from lack of oxygen.

Things go broken if you hit them enought. Boxing is stupid sport.
Eyes are deviating right, that a sign for brain problem, propably a hemorrhage or clot.

Pretty doubtful anything that happened in the ring caused his injury. It's pretty likely that he had a weakend vessel or artery aneurism that burst. Might have even been something that he's had all his life and it just gave out.
