    Chalifat rasul Allah, the "successor to the prophet of allah", to be recognized by all muslims is an impossibility. Just look at the very first caliph - the sunni muslims are ok with Abu Bakr, the Shi'a weren't. For them, Ali is the true caliph. And that was right after the death of Muhammad! Now centuries later, how should a caliph be found averyone agrees to?
