"The coup was performed in order to [...] preserve the Western control of Iran's oil infrastructure and to prevent the rising influence of communists in the Iranian government. [...] Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, made an apology to the Iranian people in 2000 for the United States' role in the overthrow."

I don't think you studied this video or the overthrow of Mossadegh of Iran. It wasn't about Islam it was about helping Britain economically rape their country of its oil. Then we put a dictator there known as The Shah and trained secret police called SAVAK which tortured and killed any dissenters (CIA created it, btw).
Do you know any of this? I doubt it.

That's not what I've learned. "All The Shah's Man" is a good book -- but not the only source I've read this from.
Britain asked the US to help them gain control over Iranian oil by having the CIA overthrow Mossadegh -- who wanted Iran to be an equal partner in its own natural resources. Mossadegh wanted an Iranian to see the ledgers to make sure the profits were being allotted fairly. Britain refused, of course, as it was getting most of the profits and also using virtual slaves to run the industry -- Iranian peasants lived in dirty little shacks while the members of the British corporation (Anglo-Iranian Oil) even had a swimming pool, tennis court, and other luxuries due to the filthy profits.
Perhaps you're right in that the US wanted to take advantage of this struggle between Britain and Iran in order to pull away British influence from there. As in : "Yes we'll help you overthrow the President of Iran but we also want part of the profits."
It looks like that is what happened, too.

Lasrever you're absolutely right in your decription of what took place. If we had allowed the democratically elected government in Iran to grow and strenghten, entire Middle East would probably be peaceful now!! It goes to prove that our statement about supporting democracy in the world is nothing but a canard. All we've'ever been after has always been our interests. Thousands of Iranians were killed/tortured during Shah's 25 year reign and we wonder why they don't trust the U.S. government.

Actually this coup was arranged financially for the U.K. and politically for Israel who physically trained the SAVAK and received heavily discounted/free oil for as long as the Shah was in power. Nation building is not an American ideal rather a transnationalist one. I attended university with a few members of the post 1979 Iranian "royal" family...they were inbred elitist assholes.
