I can fully understand why they freaked out, but I have worked with Jet Aircraft for over 20 years, believe it or not this is not the first time it has happened and probably won't be the last.
The metal that came off during take off was an engine cowling maintenance panel, danger was minimal and it was due to either a loose lock or irresponsible ground maintenance personnel.
I'm sure there are people out there that will think "WTF is he talking about?" but I just thought I would explai More..

@johnmar1 I remember I was on a 737 taking off and suddenly there was a loud bang and one of the engine flamed out. One of the passengers immediately unbuckled his safety belt to run somewhere. When the pilots applied emergency breaking, the guy went flying on the cabin like a superman. He had just to bruises.
