Turkey-Pakistan Relations: A Transformational View (Part-3)

-DR. ABDUL RUFF

____________

The civilizational threat to the global Muslims, their religion and their nations faced by the world today owes mainly to the hypocrisy of bulks of Muslims and their leaderships, the weakness in Islamic world in forging a broad united front at least among rich Muslim nations to face their contemporary challenges and defend themselves from enemy onslaught.

The key factor in Pak-Turkey ties is their firm mutual trust in face of international mischief to divide Muslim nations on many lines. Foreign relations between the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Republic of Turkey, therefore, have been traditionally positive and strong.

Pakistan and Turkey have maintained long-standing economic and military ties, with Turkey supplying arms, military equipment and training Pakistani officers. Military-to-military contacts between Ankara and Islamabad have been resolute, uncompromising and stalwart as ever, as the two countries now vigorously aiming and exploring the co-production of weapons ranging from armored vehicles to new-generation corvettes. Significantly, both sides also wish to boost defense exports to Islamic countries as an alternative to "expensive" Western weapons.

Turkey's reach out to Islamabad was in part was a post-cold war global trend when developing nations begun to raise their economic potentials by multilateral trade. It was a happy sign that in the last decade, developing countries are increasing their share in world trade. And the only reason is the high rate of urbanization, increasing population, growing consumer demand in these countries, and above all their respective economic dynamism. Trade among developing countries in the early 2000, was accounted for 25 percent of their total foreign trade and today this ratio is 60 percent. This change was more visible in Asian countries. Of course, they have seen improvements in recent years.

On global issues, these two countries have shared views and cooperated in many forums. Turkey has openly supported Pakistan's stance on the Kashmir conflict and maintained political and military support during its wars with India. Pakistan has reciprocated by expressing support for Turkey's policy on Northern Cyprus.

Pakistan and Turkey have generally concurred and supported each other on most issues facing them, be they the just settlement of Kashmir, Cyprus and Palestine problems. In the aftermath of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, Turkey stepped up its efforts to help the people of the affected areas. Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, paid an official visit to Pakistan in order to share the grief and agony of the brotherly people of Pakistan. Turkey announced a package of $150 million for the quake-hit people.

A rising power with economic clout and security partnership with big powers, Turkey is no match for Pakistan in any manner. Turkey, as a country standing between the producer and consumer countries, plays a key role in providing energy security for Europe. Threatened also by its neighbor India, Pakistan cannot provide security to its own people from NATO terror forces occupying that Islamic nation.

Istanbul came to Istanbul with a helping hand whenever there were natural calamities. In response to the 2010 Pakistan floods, Turkey issued a rallying cry for flood-hit Pakistan. Apart, from the state and its organizations, a number of Turkish businessmen also initiated aid campaigns for Pakistan. Turkey also sent a train carrying humanitarian aid for the flood stricken Pakistan. The aid consists of 300 prefabricated houses, 2,000 food parcels, and 930 sacks of flour, hygienic materials, dried food, diapers and potable water. The Turkish government also announced building of a Turkish town in the flood stricken Pakistan. Turkey has donated a total of $11 million to Pakistan. Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan also visited parts of flood stricken Pakistan, Erdoğan traveled from Islamabad to Karachi with six ministers, flying by helicopter to witness aid efforts, including the completion of a village of 2,000 prefabricated houses built by the Turkish Red Crescent near Multan, in the eastern province of Punjab.

Today, Turkey’s key strategic location as an energy transit country is considered, by one and all, critically important for Europe. The Turkish-American Council (ATC) in Washington, Poneman emphasized Turkey’s role in providing energy security for Europe and the developing cooperation between Turkey and the US in energy efficiency. For example, only 175 million dollars in 2002, the two countries' trade volume exceeded US $ 1 billion today.

However, trade volume between Turkey and Pakistan is too low. The reason lies in Islamabad’s over-emphasis on aid from USA and Europe and its inability to forge strong ties with Muslim nations who really matter. Strategic experts and media specialists of Pakistan failed to work out projects for alignments with Turkey more productively.

Interestingly, a puppet Pakistani regime and an increasingly assertive Turkey have joined hands but both have not decided to sever ties with anti-Islamic NATO-USA. That is to say, both the puppetry and assertion in relations to USA still lack courage to take bold decisions and also to implement them for the benefits of Pakistanis. Pakistani regime is only interested in promoting rich and corporate class and increases their own wealth both indoors and abroad. People are just vote bank stuff.

The worst fate engulfed Islamabad upon the bogus Sept-11 hoax when former President of Pakistan Gen. P. Musharraf let the US state terror gang illegally use Pakistani soil to attack Afghanistan on fake WMD/Sept-11pretext. Musharraf was instrumental in making an Islamic Pakistan anti-Islamic by mortgaging Islamabad to American state terror gangs.

Under the pretext of Sept-11 hoax, USA and its notorious UNSC allies are searching for “strategic partners” to terrorize and dehumanize the humanity and to loot and ruin the world. Currently, Americans are after energy resources and their routes in Islamic world for which the illegal wars have been launched first in Afghanistan, spread to Pakistan and other nations.

Turkey can guide Islamabad to search for alternative routes for protect people and nation, improve welfare measures for the people.
