The first step to getting a sharp edge on your knife is the "burr". Without accomplishing this initial step properly, you'll never be satisfied with the edge you produce.

A lot of people will flip back and forth between edges when sharpening. Always grind one side of the knife first, until you have raised the burr along the entire edge of the blade... then flip it over and repeat the process until you have again raised the burr.

Once you have this basic process down, you can polish the edge you have created down to a razor sharpness. You'll be amazed at your new-found skill.
