Hundreds, if not thousands, of Afghan women commit suicide by
self-immolation each year to escape abusive marriages, abusive in-laws
and poverty. Divorce is considered too shameful of an option for a woman
who wants to leave a marriage, and thus suicide is a more viable
option. Many afghan women who commit suicide use items found in the home
to burn themselves alive, such as cooking oil and matches, rather than
face the situations they live in. Self-immolation is a growing method of
suicide, and as Afghanistan continues along the path of war and
economic recession, the number increases.
