The last starfighters
Derived from Lockheed's design studies on a "Super Starfighter", the F-104S was one of the most capable of the F-104 series, and destined to be the last in service worldwide. The F-104S (upgraded to ASA/M standard) was retired from service in October 2004.
Decommissioning ceremony
Listen at 1.24 1.42 & 2.33 you can hear the distinct " howl of the GE-J-79 engine.
Although the J-79 powered many other aircraft only the starfighter made the unigue" howl "
I've had the great fortune to have flown in the back seat of one , one word.....AWESOME

Awesome plane.
I've heard that they used to have to put protective covers on the leading edges of the wings because they were so sharp.

Look and sound like rockets but also known as "widow makers" - this a/c was hard to handle at low speeds.

High speed interceptors. Really good with missiles but not much point trying to dog fight in them.
I've only flown in a few jets. My father trained air force pilots but I mostly just got to ride along in prop-planes. I did get to ride in an old bomber and John Denver rented a hangar with my father so I met him a few times but never really thought he was a big deal :)
You're lucky to fly in such a powerful fighter.

It was pure adreneline ! I loved every second . Not much chance of pulling G's in turns though, the turn radius is 2 miles !

@James-T-Kirk I bet I could make it take a tighter turn.. Well maybe not without losing a lot of altitude :)

@James-T-Kirk I'm willing to bet my life that the tail would stay intact... Just not that it'd be easy to pull out of the deep stall I'd put myself in... Not withough enough altitude anyway.

I was talkng to svetkoff after the flight and he said if you tried to pull it into a tight turn it would rip off the control surfaces or the tail would break off. The tightest turn they can make is maybe 1 mile pushing it, depends on the speed. The ejection seats still work in all 3 of his aircraft , I remember him telling me " whatever you do, DON'T pull that lever " LOL !

So out of the whole fleet, how many did get scrapped? or in other words, are there a bunch of them still out there?, i'd like to see and hear one some day.

Look up starfighters Inc. There are 3 owned by Rick Svetkoff based in clearwater FL.
They used to do the airshow circuit but now do government work.
BTW. The USAF only ever had 256 in service. The rest were built in canada and Italy under license.

@James-T-Kirk When i was serving in the Royal Engineers in Germany BAOR we did many exercises with various elements of the army and air force we used to do landing pads for harrier Jump Jets in the forests and places on one such exercise the RAF offered a back seat ride in a harrier trainer with two seats every on in the squadron RE put there names in the hat and guess what the SSM his name came out twat and he got the ride.

One of the very first plastic models I built as a kid was of this aircraft. This was around 1978 or 1979. Awesome looking jet fighter that still holds it own even today.

@Chefabknaller Oh, you are only saying that because it has incredible stall characteristics (and I don't mean that positively), ejects downward, and doesn't suffer pilots who are ever behind the machine. Now doesn't it look great? ;)
