British Army Evacuating Norway May 1940

Montage of British and German color footage about the Allied dramatic retreat from Norway, with the destruction of harbour facilities and oil supplies. At the end we can see the early moments of the German occupation.

Despite the German victory, for the Kriegsmarine the campaign led to crippling losses, with the sinking of one of its two heavy cruisers, two of its six light cruisers, 10 of its 20 destroyers and six U-boats. With additional ships damaged during the campaign the Kriegsmarine was left with a surface force of a single heavy cruiser, two light cruisers and four destroyers operational.

However, the overall failure for Britain to assist the Norwegians and repulse the attack, lead to the Norway Debate in the British parliament. Taking place on May 7 and May 8, 1940, the debate witnessed a massive outpouring of criticism and hostility towards the general conduct of the war and the government of Neville Chamberlain. In the vote at the end of the debate there was a sizable rebellion of government supporters who voted against their own government or refused to support it.

Two days later Chamberlain resigned and Winston Churchill was swept to power as his replacement.
