CCTV:November 14/08,Manchester,England.BUNGLING raider Rikki Doakes was caught when he was trapped inside the bank he was robbing.
Remarkable CCTV footage shows him repeatedly punching the glass double doors, kicking them, and then returning, in desperation, with a chair which he uses as a battering ram. What he doesn't realise when he begins his attempted escape is that one of the doors is actually UNLOCKED.
He threatens staff with a fake pistol and takes £15,000 from the tills then tries to open the right-hand door to make his getaway. He finds it locked and orders the security guard to open it. What he doesn't realise is that the left hand door is unlocked and that the quick-thinking security guard is actually locking the door, trapping him inside.
The footage shows Doakes clambering over the counter, brandishing a pistol into the faces of workers at a branch of the Halifax in Blackpool. He kicks the door several times, walks off, comes back and punches the door. Then he returns with a blue chair, which he throws at the door.
He walks off, returns to the door, only to see armed police outside. He tries to climb into a roof space to hide, doesn't manage it, and is then pictured back at the door with his hands behind his head, before being arrested.
Doakes, 25 and unemployed, from Coventry, admitted robbery and possessing an imitation firearm at Preston Crown Court. Det Con Alan Quanbrough, of Blackpool CID, said: "This was a terrifying experience for the people working in the branch - some of those behind the counter had a gun shoved in their face - they were only 17 and 18 years old.
"You can see from the way the shoppers fled the branch the very real fear they felt.
"Although the pistol only turned out to be an imitation firearm, people are not to know that and it was a very frightening experience."
Doakes went into the Halifax at midday on October 25. He pulled out the pistol, sparking mass panic as customers fled the town centre branch. He then ran to the counters and aimed the gun at staff, demanding money.
After Doakes admitted the raid, Judge Anthony Russell QC warned him he could face a lengthy prison sentence. The judge added: "This is a very serious offence and a custodial sentence is inevitable."
