There is no reason why the U.S military should be limited to the M4 and M16 only. Come on! You mean to tell me there is nothing better out there like the HK 416?
why not just use AK's? from what I've heard (could be wrong) in Nam they hated the m16, tended to jam and overheat. Ak's are cheap as water, easy to produce, easily upgradable, and undoubtedly the most robust gun ever made. If I had a choice, I think id go for the AR10, but if I was In a dirty sandy desert type warzone, I want reliability and stopping power of an AK.
Too bad they cost more than the FN scar and offer little in return. The FN scar is the lightest of all the new piston rifles EXCEPT the Robinson XCR. I will be buying the civilian model of the SCAR and 416 when they come out in however...
Fn scar runs about 3k after taxes and the hk416 runs nearly 5k. The weight issue is why HK lost to FN on the Special Operations account, the HK is nearly 2 lbs heavier than the Scar.
If the military replaced its rifles everytime something new came out how do you think the gun industry would react? They would make damn sure every year they added or modifed something from last years rifle and the military would spend billions and junking thousands and thousands of rifles every year for little return. The M16 platform gets the job done. When something comes along that justifeds a total change over I have know doubt the military will do it when it best suits them. A lot of people think the new 6.8 SPC is worth what the military has been waiting for but that remains to be seen.
One more think. The russians do not use the AK-47 anymore. They have been using the AK-74 for many years. It looks like an AK-47 but fires a round very similar to the NATO 5.56mm. Search 5.45x39 if you don't believe me.
H&K make great stuff, but the only difference here is in the gas system. While it is good,it is not THAT much better then what is in use now. No need to change over.
These are $1600 a piece! And they are not "slightly heavier" than an M4, they are a buttload heavier than an M4. 555 is correct, this rifle uses a gas piston to run the bolt, the M4/M16 ised a gas tube. I've done the very same sand/dirt, water/ice test to an M16A1, M16A2 and an M4 and they all ran perfectly. I think the HK guy was embarrased about his stovepipe because he didn't know how to clear it...in a firefight, he would lose.

Our soldiers are welcome to buy and fight with whatever ******* gun they have.
But if they want to wage war on the taxpayers' dime, M4/M16 it is.

But I bet you want the taxpayers to pay for your health insurance. Hypocrite.

That's not true. Most do not have the choice to buy one.

Because H&K wants a ridiculous amount for these rifles and the M4s and M16's work just fine.
