Building the Panama Canal

On August 15th, 1914, the Panama Canal opened, connecting the world's two largest oceans and signaling America's emergence as a global superpower. American ingenuity and innovation had succeeded where, just a few years earlier, the French had failed disastrously. But the U.S. paid a price for victory.

  • Truly a engineering feat in itself. Although I had been through the locks multiple times, spent a lot of time at then open Ft. Sherman. I recently read up on the Panama canal. I must say I was truly impressed. A shame Carter just gave it up literally.

We should have taken it back when we went into Panama

  • I Voted and Fav'd and will watch later. Thx Buoy!

It was an amazing accomplishment. More so if you know the history. The odds were against it from the beginning. This is one of mankind's greatest achievements on many levels.

And both the French and Americans can be proud of what they accomplished. The Americans can be especially proud of this monumental govt project that was so incredibly well managed and corruption free.

The Panamanians, however, cannot take any credit for this early a More..
