August 5, 2007- Police fired shots and tear gas to disperse a rioting crowd Monday during tribal unrest in Papua New Guinea's capital, with unconfirmed reports saying a man died from a gunshot wound and others were injured.
The disturbance at the seaside Koki Market in Port Moresby was sparked by the stabbing death of a youth from the Wanigela tribe on Sunday, allegedly by a member of the rival Goilala tribe.
Hundreds of angry Wanigelas reacted by blocking the main road and burning tires Sunday night and again Monday morning before police arrived.
Dozens of armed police officers cordoned off the market area and fired rifle shots and tear gas canisters.
