"Butter flavoring" in popcorn causes lung problems

A
popcorn manufacturer in Chester, Illinois has been ordered to dish out
nearly seven-point-two-million dollars to a man in Colorado. The
"Chicago Tribune" reports Wayne Watson developed a condition called
"popcorn lung" after eating microwave popcorn with labels manufactured
by the Gilster-Mary Lee Corporation. It's an irreversible condition
which makes it difficult for air to flow out of the lungs.

Watson
claimed the company, and the grocery store where he purchased the
popcorn, were negligent because they didn't provide a warning label on
the popcorn packaging, letting customers know the butter flavoring on
the popcorn could be dangerous. The Gilster-Mary Lee Corporation is
responsible for paying 80-percent of the settlement.

  • how stupid can people be and they want to be paid for it? If it says "flavor" it means it's a chemical idjit. You stay away from any food that has chemicals in it and you'll be allright, more or les.

  • The US legal system is pathetic. It rewards people for being stupid as well as legitimising non-existent illnesses made up by lawyers

    • @pete1774 This one is very real. The stuff is called Diacetyl, but it was eliminated several years ago by the manufacturer that make the popcorn that US Cub Scouts sell as a fundraiser. They did it because of the threat to the employees in the factory. I thought that the threat was due to the concentration an employee would see daily, I didn't know consumers were at risk as well. Here's a snippet from Wikipedia:

      Diacetyl (popcorn workers lung)
      Diacetyl
In rare instances, bronchiolitis obli More..

  • Standing in front of a machine that magically cooks "foods" in mere seconds, while thinking "hurry!!" it should be of no surprise that ones genetics are not evolved enough to ward off potential dangers.

  • Just what we need is another idiot sticker in our world full of idiot stickers.

Shit like: don't use your toaster in the bathtub. A sleep aid that warns it may make you drowsy, never use a lit match or open flame to check fuel levels, flammable liquid gases may catch fire, a box of eggs that says "contents may contain eggs", insecticides that say "not for human consumption", superman costume "this product does not make you fly".

Now we will get one that says afte More..

Except this isn't a "Hot coffee" suit. I'm sure you didn't know immitation butter could coat your lungs and potentially suffocate you... fat yes, coating the lungs, no.

No, I didn't know that eating 7,000 bags of popcorn could have some sort of health issues attached to it.

Watson, the claimant, ate two bags of popcorn a day for ten years. About seven thousand bags of popcorn in total.
The issue in my mind is: the company knew diacetyl caused popcorn lung in workers, but no one could have ever suspected a customer would individually eat that much popcorn.

And what does King Soopers/ Kroger have to do with the product? They just sold it?
