That happened in our back yard when I was a child and lightning also shot out of the dishwasher, giving my mother a nice little zap! The trees that explode like this one do so because the moisture in the tree instantly vaporizes and expands. That's my understanding anyway.

I concur, across the street from me there was a tall pine tree that took a strike. I heard a high pressure POP, one breaker in my box also trippd as well as the door bell rang for some reason ???
All the sap in the tree turned to steam and the bark split down the tree in a spiral, candy cane fashion.
