DROUGHT devastation will trigger soaring food prices in the UK, experts
have warned.

British shoppers face forking out more for staples such as bread, meat and
pasta amid the crisis.

A British Retail Consortium spokesman warned of the impact after dozens of
drought-hit US states declared disaster areas.

A washout summer has also blighted harvests in Britain, adding to the strain.

Supermarkets have resorted to stocking expensive imports of common veg such as
potatoes and peas from Africa, Central America and the Middle East.

Arable land in the US covering an area larger than Belgium and Luxembourg
combined has been abandoned.

Soaring food prices are already severely impacting millions of families, a
Tory MP warned last night.

Price hike ... shoppers in Britain face soaring food costs

Some parents are already forced to skip meals to feed their children as
incomes come under pressure from above-target inflation.

Food price threats are a blow to George Osborne's election plan, aimed at
curbing inflation.

  • So, are all those countries who we sent foreign aid to going to return the favor and help us out when we're in need?

    • @WolfBite120 I doubt it very much.

Of course they will. There's only one race, the human race - those 3rd World countries are full of people just like us. They will return the favour, for sure because all people are essentially good and concerned for the welfare of all other humans, on this tiny speck of dust we call Earth.

  • Here in Hawaii, I have already seen a major increase in prices of certain food items, higher than normal. No laugh, yet simple things like Peanut butter and just about all products associated to Wheat, Peanuts and Corn are going through the roof. As much as a $2.00 price increase within the past 2 months due to the severe and lasting drought conditions in some states

    • @Koranimal yup just to begin with shits expensive, especially booze, i stayed with some friend who live in oahu on north shore. Liquor is pretty damn expensive and basic fast food is usually more. I could only imagine how much prices are now.

  • note the chart is about grain production - not all produce.
and note that because the chart does not include other produce, it also does not include other countries such as China and India Mexico... all very large producers. though admittedly since they have such large populations of their own, they cannot export very much.
with good usable farm land going to development more and more in the US, there is a lot less produced, so adding a drought onto it will not help any.
it won't be long and we More..
