  • Dostler was executed for having ordered the shooting of fifteen U.S. Army Rangers who had been captured in uniform.

    • According to "ze Germans" the G.I. that he had executed weren't in uniform when caught.

    • There was some argument over this when another version of this video was posted last December. So I looked up the trial record and one of the findings was that the GIs were rangers in uniform when captured. Dostler never argued that point but instead claimed that he was merely passing on orders from higher up. That claim didn't wash with the tribunal, obviously.

The trial record from Rome is here with the uniform reference at the bottom of p. 25:

    • If they truly werent then they could be executed. If you pretend to be civilian or carry out attacks as such or dressed in your enemys clothes you can be summarily executed because your inviting retribution acts against civilians

    • @john731863
You are wrong U.S Army Rangers were in Italian army uniforms. And he have every right to tried them as spies and to execute them. Americans also executed many Germans for same reason (e.g every S.S soldier who was found in U.S uniform or in civil cloth was tried and executed for espionage. But history shows Americans usually have double standards.

    • You're an idiot. Where did you get this bogus information?

"All OGs of the working and security parties were dressed in the field uniform of the US Army, wearing woolen OD shirts and trousers. Calcara, Tremonte, and Farrell wore paratrooper boots, the others, regulation GI shoes with canvas leggings, Some had OD sweaters. All had either the old-type jacket or the new pile of type, which they wore inside out to eliminate shine. They also wore knit-stocking caps. Most of the enlisted men w More..

    • my take is that the two arm shooters knew he ordered the death of 14 Army brothers, and decided to do what they could to make his death slow.

  • according to german wiki, initially an officer of dostler staff, Alexander zu Dohna-Schlobitten, had been ordered to forward the execution order, which originated from general field mashal kesselring (the italian theatre CiC of the wehrmacht at the time). according to dohna's personal diary, the 15 rangers had decided to voluntarily surrender to the wehrmacht, after having realised that their mission ´was doomed to fail since the german troops were in full alert already.
