TORONTO - More than 100 pro-Palestine
protesters took to Bloor St. W. Saturday angry at what they believe is
the injustice forced on their homeland by Israel.
They weren’t alone as Israeli supporters lined the other side of the road in front of the Israeli Consulate.
Even though a cease fire has at least temporarily stopped the
bloodshed, the blood was boiling in Toronto as the two sides hurled
insults and slogans at each other with a heavy police presence standing
by.
Savahat Attmed said she was there because he wanted a free Palestine.
“I am here to support Palestine,” Attmed said. “I hope for an end to
the apartheid when Israel will set the people free. Fifty per cent of
the injuries are people under 18 years of age. I want them to have the
same freedoms as Canadian kids.”
This is a show of solidarity with people who are suffering, said Mohamed Dimassi.
“I can’t be there so I am here to show they are not forgotten,” Dimassi said. “We are still connected to our homeland.”
Bernie Farber, chief executive with the Canadian Jewish Congress says the bombings have to stop.
“This has been going on since 1942,” Farber said. “It is time to find
a real peace where Palestine has secure borders. The Canadian
government needs a balanced approach. Palestine has legitimate issues.”
Meir Weinstein, director of the Jewish Defence Leagues says it is important to oppose pro-Hamas rallies.
“Their goal is the destruction of Israel and when they take to the
street, we will be there to oppose that,” Weinstein said. “They want a
second Holocaust. The message ‘Never Again’ means we will fight back.”
Frances Flint is pleased the Canadian government is supporting Israel.
“I am happy with the position of (Prime Mininster Stephen) Harper,”
Flint said. “World leaders are supporting Israel when they see the
savagery.”
