Been there, done that and got the t-shirt. At the entry way to the pyramids, the egyptian guide at the actual pyramid entry asked many of us if we wanted to buy hashish. Camels tend to be grouchy workers and the pyramid camels are no exception.

Cairo as well as most of the egyptian population live in the "Nile River valley" an approx 50 mile wide belt of green that border the Nile River. The pyramids are built right at the edge where the Nile river valley meets the desert. Everything else in egypt outside of the narrow Nile river valley green belt is like Death valley, CA.

I don't think I would go back again. When I went, egypt and israel had just signed their peace treaty and the place was relatively peaceful. If you had money, they loved you. Since i've been there, multiple western tourist buses have been targeted and shot or blown up.

Well, the funny thing is that the city is actually pretty close to the pyramids. In all the pictures you see you would imagine that it's just desert and camels but you can walk, literally, a few hundred yards away from the Great Pyramid and go to a Pizza Hut.
