Cleared for publication: IDF forces operating on the Israel-Egypt border Wednesday uncovered an explosive device, which was later blown up in a controlled detonation by sappers.

The bomb was discovered by members of the Karakal Battalion who were on a routine patrol in the region.

The army said the circumstances of the incident are being reviewed and added that the bomb may have targeted forces operating in the area.

At this time, the explosive device's origin is unknown, but officials estimate it was brought into Israel via the Sinai desert. The perpetrators of the act are also unknown at this time.

The bomb was uncovered in an open area located near well-known smuggling routes in the region.

In November of last year, IDF troops foiled an attack after spotting a suspect in possession of a bag on the Egypt border. The bag was later found to contain a powerful explosive device weighing 15 kilograms (33 pounds.) However, the terrorist in possession of the bomb managed to flee the scene.
