Expedition
30 Flight Engineers Don Pettit, Oleg Kononenko and Andre Kuipers
launched at 8:16 a.m. EST on Wednesday (7:16 p.m. local time) from the
Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The three new International Space
Station crew members launched in their Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft
beginning a two-day trip to the orbiting outpost.

      Shuttles are more expensive and less safe by far than disposable spacecraft. That's why the Russians never made a shuttle.

      I've heard Richard Feynman describe it in these terms, I'm paraphrasing. The space shuttle was the result of a huge bureaucracy left over from the Apollo missions, one of the first things they had to do was come up with reasons to keep the huge budgets they commanded after the Apollo missions to the moon.
