WWII parachute mine found in Helford River is
detonated
A Royal Navy bomb disposal team have safely detonated a large World
War II mine a mile off the coast of Falmouth.
The German device, 6ft
(1.8m) by 3ft (91cm), which contained more than 700kg (1,540lb) of explosives,
was towed out to sea from the Helford River.
About 50 boats gathered
along a safety cordon a mile from the centre of the detonation site to
watch.
Bomb disposal officer, Sid Lawrence said the bomb was "very, very
powerful and very big".

today I drove across east London, down by the old dockyards, the place is still littered with open areas in housing groups where these mines were usually intended for. they literally changed the landscape around here - often for the worst unfortunately.

Now if they had towed it into downtown Hamburg and blew it up, that would have had panache.

@ad astra It was probably meant for falmouth docks as a big bomb they would drop these then go in with incendiary bombs just like the Brits we called them cookies

I've read that there are about 10k UEB from WW2 still undiscovered. Don't know if that's true or not. Watch where you step in Europe.

Don't worry. We put roads, car parks and houses on top of them.

@Swellgh There's one sunken ship in the Thames Estuary alone with that many bombs and incendiaries onboard. It's called the USS Montgomery and has an estimated 13,700 devices ready to go up at any time.
Also, off the coast of Northern Ireland, there's a mammoth WW1 & WW2 dumping ground with all sorts of bad things mixed up in the melee!
