I would not want to be a soldier on either side in these Pacific battles. The Marines were mighty big targets and the Japs were trapped with nowhere to retreat. Heavy casualties always. The NAvy and air always prepped the island before invasion but the Jap fortifications were so good that the effect was minimal - it was later found that Marines caused most enemy casualties, followed in effectiveness by artillery then air attack.
