  • ice one DCM, I'm glad you kept pushing to get this up!

What in hell are they going to do with all that nice sludge?

    • @aussite

That stuff will probably dry out fairly quickly. Has the appearance of tidal mud which tends to dry up quickly.

    • @RickPerry2012 Thanks for that info. I know the ocean but this is a little different and I'm not up to speed on what happens when they take out a dam like this.

Certainly looks like very unpleasant stuff!

    • @aussite - I also think, since the dam was taken out in autumn, that leaves the winter run-off to help clear out the sludge. Usually takes about two years to get back to the native stream-bed (depending on the water depth of the dam).

    • @viennachoirboy Thanks for the further info.

As I said earlier here, Ocean , I know that very well, dam removal and the after affects, not so much.

I have side scanned thousands of miles of ocean bottom and even a few reservoirs.

The reservoirs always presented a challenge because of the pudding like consistency of the bottom. It is so soft that it makes for very poor sonar return signals. Very hard to identify targets.

Side Scan sonar paints a picture with sound and that picture ge More..

It will just return back to normal with some help by planting and normal Forest Service duties.

I would assume the destruction of the dam was done when just to get rid of the "sludge".

If there were no dam to begin with the sludge would have gone downhill naturally.

I have no training but just my judging from growing up around it.

Forest service is one govt agency that actually plans in 20 periods.

Lol, unlike all the other "humans"

  • I would have loved to see them explode that dam when the water level was high. I mean, for no other reason than that it would look really cool to see such a thing.

  • Interesting. Any idea why the dam wasn't just left in place instead of making that mess?

    • @Captain Canuck - they are taking out dams when they are no longer serve any purpose. Various reasons are: it restores the original habitat (improves fisheries up and down stream), negates long-term maintenance costs and the risk of longterm, unpredicted failure of the dam.
