Naples police release chilling footage of murder in bid to break law of silence
CCTV footage of this killing carried out in the street in broad daylight was posted on the Internet by Naples police in the hope that someone would step forward and help identify the murderer.
The scene occurred on May 11 in the neighbourhood of Sanità, in central Naples. The images were filmed by a surveillance camera and made public by Naples’ public prosecutor. The victim, Mariano Bacio T
More..erracino,53, was listed as a known thief in police files. His murder may have been ordered by the notorious Neapolitan mafia, the Camorra.
Innocenzo Datri, a lawyer, works as a pro bono counsellor for a Naples neighbourhood town hall.
Posting this video online was important: it may spark a public reaction and break the law of silence that usually surrounds mafia killings.
As you can see from the images, there’s a fair degree of indifference among the passers-by who witness the murder. A similar decision to go public with a video was made earlier this year, after the murder of a gypsy. The public reaction it sparked allowed the murderers to be arrested and charged.
This type of investigation usually takes several months. Now with this method, it will be easier to find witnesses willing to come forward.
Statistics show that Naples’ crime rate is dropping, as it is elsewhere. But this is only true for small crimes like stealing cars or hand bags. Mafia criminality, on the other hand, is on the rise, as it has been since 2001. In 2003, several hundred people were killed in clan wars. Thanks to Roberto Saviano’s movie "Gomorra", there is more public awareness on this serious issue in Italy and the world.
The Camorra (Naples mafia) can’t be wiped out. It’s like a cancer that has infiltrated our organism and is here to stay. But it won’t kill Naples as long as civil society remains vigilant. "
