I remember this from class. Pterygium means wing in latin and its also called surfer's eye because people exposed to windy conditions at sea over long periods of time are prone to contract it. This is just one surgery I could never do, I hate watching tools scraping the eyes. The cornea is actually the surface tissue in the entire human body with most nerve endings, so many that it can even detect the tiny layer of tear film breaking up surface tension triggering the blink reflex. Pretty cool.
