Non union solar plant workers told to stay home w/o pay during Obama's visit/speech.

The Gulf spill lays at the feet of environmentalists, who forced the oil companies to go dangerously (w/ today's recovery tech) far off shore to drill: in my state they banned drilling inside of 75 miles of coast !!!

WASHINGTON — In a boost to the Bay Area's status as a hub of the cleantech industry, President Barack Obama will tour Fremont solar panel manufacturer Solyndra during a 19-hour swoop through the region next week.

Solyndra received a $535 million federal loan guarantee last year to build a new solar panel manufacturing plant that now employs 1,000 workers, according to the White House. The Obama administration has touted the project as a major success story of the economic stimulus bill, which provided the funding. A second phase is expected to employ an additional 1,000 people, Solyndra officials have said.

Before his Wednesday morning visit to Solyndra, Obama will attend a pair of Democratic fundraisers Tuesday evening in San Francisco — one for Sen. Barbara Boxer, who is seeking a fourth term in November, and another for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

It's the president's second trip to the Bay Area since he took office. He made a quick trip to San Francisco in October, also for a Democratic fundraiser. Last month, Obama headlined a fundraiser in Los Angeles for Boxer, who is bracing for a tough re-election battle this fall.

Obama's stop at Solyndra won't be open to the public, but it will be covered by the media. Obama plans to chat with plant workers and talk about his efforts to revive the economy and create jobs.

Solyndra, whose officials did not return calls Friday seeking comment, assembles solar panels using glass tubes with a thin film of nonsilicon semiconductor material.

Obama will be in and out in less than a day — he's planning to arrive late Tuesday afternoon and depart just before noon Wednesday.

News of the president's trip capped a stellar week for the Bay Area's — and especially the city of Fremont's — green-energy profile. On Thursday, Tesla Motors announced plans to make electric cars at Toyota's recently shuttered NUMMI plant there.
