  • Quotes from the Brilliant Alan Arkin of the Washington Post:
%u201CBob Gates will find that there is no solution in Iraq and no answer%u201D.
%u201CNothing is going to change in Iraq in 2007. The reasons are manifold: the President is too dense, too stubborn, has a distorted sense of American honor and his own credibility, or even has such superior intelligence and vision about the fight -- but for whatever the reasons might be, the surge will happen, a battle of Baghdad will be fought with the same old "wack-a-mole" outcome, fighters will move elsewhere until we are done, the casualties will continue, Iraqi security forces will continue not to be able to do the job, the Iraqi government will be itself sectarian and nationally weak%u201D.
Am I missing something here? Petraeus is credited with single-minded pursuit of his mission and the intellectual brainpower to "get the job done," as if the guys commanding the effort to this point have been a bunch of idiots. An army of successful acronyms, however, does not confirm anything, and Iraq is as it was during Petraeus' two earlier tours, a disorganized and hopeless mess.
%u201CThere is speculation that Petraeus favors an increase in forces - a good thing given that it is a forgone conclusion that that is where the President is going - making him an amenable partner to captain the sinking ship. But is there any particular reason to applaud his earlier experience in Iraq or his achievements?%u201D
%u201CBut still I ask, why the optimism? Though Petraeus may be an intellectual and promotional wizard, I have a hard time seeing any true success and product from his early work in or on Iraq%u201D.
