When they fired that on our carrier it sounded like a loud ass jigsaw cutting through plywood.
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ a zillion rounds right then.
It was shooting the pieces from the target as it shot it down.

I bet that's a scary sound to hear during hostilities! You know the anti-ship missles are inbound and CLOSE! Thanks Smokey, nice.

@aa316 - about 75 rounds/sec from that unit, 4 seconds firing was about 300 rounds. There would be about 5 bursts like that worth of rounds in the container before reloading was required.

Iran thinks it will sneak a missile through 20 of these guns in a carrier group. It's a wall of metal that nothing will pass through. Acquisition, tracking and firing all automated. Earlier designs have malfunctioned causing it to fire at things that weren't supposed to be fired at. They've ironed out those bugs and now it's just a sea to air killing machine.

@weada - the preference is to have outer zones of defense engage and neutralize threats. CIWS gun units are a last layer of defense and they have known limitations, including limited range and limited number of engagements due to ammunition usage. This is why the emphasis for defense is on RAM for short range and ESSM/SM-2 wider areas.

The best part was when they laughed, and it swung back around like: "What, did you say something?" Lol.

Raytheon mount, aquisition, targeting and engagement hardware and software. General Dynamics gun. Up to 6,000 rounds a minute - that 100 rounds a second. Big, heavy, 30mm projectiles.
Army uses these in Iraq and Afghanistan on incoming mortar rounds. They never miss.
Phenominal system.
Reloading is fast and easy - 4 - 5 minutes for a full magazine.

@pthogen14niner - it's 20mm, rate of fire is 3K-4.5K. Naval version uses tungsten sabot rounds, land-based version uses HE with self destruct fusing. Shown in this video is a current model, Block 1B.
