If you are a bird, that has GOT to be the best fun. What I want to know is which bird is the leader? Or is this a natural example of distributed computing?
Quoted comment by jackal452: Very cool to watch...
(Aren't they actually considered pests, though?)
Starlings are originally a European species. They were brought over in the 16 and 1700s. They are essentially an invasive species in North America and they have no natural enemies here besides the odd hawk and target shooters. They are very good at what they do.
What if all blobs that move around like a unit are composed of individual, independent, sentient little living things like that? What if the cells in our bodies are actually sentient beings in a community and communicating with each other. What if communities that come together form a larger living whole? What if all the computers in the world joined onto the internet form a moving electrical blob that constitutes its own intelligence and "consciousness".

This is a great example of a phenomena known as emergence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergence) which is basically the generation of complex patterns via numerous relatively simple interactions.
