Fernando Meirelles's City of God-The Horrors of Life in the Slums of Rio de Janeiro (Disturbing and really difficult to watch)
Better helps one understand why things are the way they are in Rio's favelas. The kid who's crying really is just acting. He's so convincing it's almost hard to tell. Almost all of the kids in this film were not actors and they actually lived in the slums where this was shot. If you haven't seen this, I highly recommend you do. It truly is a masterpiece.

God that was a great movie!! There is the second one, city of men, which is fucking great too. Also Elite Squad and Elite Squad 2 are equally as good

@SSSox88 Pretty sure I have all of them but have watched none of them.
I am an avid movie collector but rarely get the time to watch them.Saving them up for retirement or when the internet gets shut down I guess ;o)
I have a very, very large collection.

The way our government is plundering our economy and currency slums may very well be a reality in the not too distant future.

Indeed great acting. It highlights the fools who pay $20 (or whatever it costs to get into the movies) to see grossly overpaid morons with a plastic faces, perform like organ monkey's to tunes written in brain-dead scripts.

It was a good movie.. in its day. Doesn't mean much now.
Gomorra (ITA) was an exceptional movie of that specific genre, a few years later. A startlingly realistic slice of urban decay. American cinema (north or south) can't hold a candle to Europe

@ghostsofmany Interesting how you compared this to Gomorra based on the fact that these two films were both touted by many critics to be the "second coming" of The Godfather upon their releases. Gomorra was quite good. Do you mean European cinema vs Americas currently or all time?

@SSSox88 ...It's the realism.. they both might actually hold the same, as far as being 'realistic', to the viewers in their own respective continents.. I've never been to sunny-copacabana, or USA for that matter, but the saccharin-laced cinematography is hard to get with most of the time.
Yes I mean current, ofcourse... Post-2001. Prior to that, it goes without saying, some of the greatest movies ever were made on your side of the lake...
The Birds
The Shin... aww fuck it, I'd just rhyme off a More..
