OTTAWA, April 14 (Xinhua) -- A Canadian soldier was killed and four others injured when their armored vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan Monday, the Canadian Department of National Defense said Tuesday.

The explosion took place north of Kandahar City in the Shah Wali Kowt District at about approximately 5 p.m. Kandahar time Monday, the department said in a press release.

The injured soldiers were evacuated by helicopter to an airfield hospital. Two of them have been released after treatment.

The fallen woman trooper, at 21 years, was only the second Canadian female to die in Afghanistan since 2002.

Canada has now lost 117 military personnel in Afghanistan since the mission began in 2002. Most have died from roadside bomb blasts.
