Yeap, heavier bullets with a more aerodynamic(armor piercing for example) shape can still be lethal under 10 feet, but if they enter the water at super sonic velocity the impact often fragments them.

Good thing the test didn't fail or you would need to take off a shoe to count to 10.

Pretty amazing how the force of the water stops the bullet.

It always makes me smile when we see in movies heroes swimming deep underwater dodging bullets fired from above, as if bullets wouldn't be stopped by two or three feet of water.
That includes a scene from Saving Private Ryan:

" 'Hiding underwater can stop bullets from hitting you'
PARTLY CONFIRMED
All supersonic bullets (up to .50-caliber) disintegrated in less than 3 feet (90 cm) of water, but slower velocity bullets, like pistol rounds, need up to 8 feet (2.4 metres) of water to slow to non-lethal speeds. Shotgun slugs require even more depth (the exact depth couldn’t be determined because their one test broke the rig). However, as most water-bound shots are fired from an angle, less actual d More..

@daleastor
The shotgun slug blasting the rig should have been expected as the shock wave with that kind of projectile is very strong.
As for animals being killed at a depth of 10 feet, I have never seen that, I have only seen how they do in forensic laboratories to recover bullets fired from all sorts of common guns: with a simple water tank.

Yeah, all depends on angle/round/distance/etc. But the velocity factor is most interesting, in that if too fast, the round disintegrates shortly after impact.

If I recall correctly, the scenes with soldiers dying underwater had them quite close to the surface (maybe a foot or two). That seems reasonable for a 7.92×57mm Mauser to remain lethal.

I would expect a significant difference between a bullet fired from land into water as compared to a bullet fired underwater...

Ought to be careful setting off explosives in a swimming pool , the concussion can crack the pool , for example when I was much younger and stupid , I threw an M-80 into the shallow end of a pool , was a real show , water went up for about ten ft. Later I thought that it could have cracked the pool , that would have been a very expensive mistake.
