Suspect Slams Into Patrol Car During Chase

Moments after a high speed chase is called off for getting way too dangerous, a suspected drunk driver slams into a deputy's cruiser and it's all caught on dash cam.

The chase started around 4 p.m. on Monday near the Ohkay Owingeh pueblo.

Tribal units began chasing the suspect, Steven Trujillo, in a Nissan Maxima through Espanola. Espanola police joined the pursuit.

The dash cam video shows officers dodging out of the way as Trujillo appeared to slam on his breaks as they followed behind.

Dash cam video shows officers dodging Truijillo's vehicle as he appeared to slam on his breaks.

Lieutenant Christian Lopez of the Espanola Police Department says the suspect continually pulled his emergency break throughout the chase.

"He was attempting to make our units ram into his tail end," said Lopez.

In the video, officers are seen falling back as Trujillo approached the Fairview intersection.

Lopez said the chase was then called off because it was too dangerous for other drivers out on the road.

According to reports, Trujillo's car slid into the oncoming lane and T-boned a deputy's vehicle as the deputy was trying to get out of the way.

The deputy suffered minor injuries in the crash but was then able chase down and arrest Trujillo after he fled the scene on foot.

The police say they found an ignition interlock system in the suspect's car.

"When you see the ignition interlock your first impression is well he should have blown into it and that's why the car started so he shouldn't be impaired," said Lopez.

Lopez later said the Trujillo smelled of alcohol and was slurring his speech after his arrest.

"Talking to the other passenger that was with him, apparently what this guy does is he drinks and when he gets somewhere he has someone else blow into the interlock for him," Said Lopez. "And that's how he gets his car moving."

Investigators are waiting for blood tests results to find out if Trujillo was drunk.

They are also investigating whether the ignition interlock was working before the chase.
