Duh! What happened is not at all an explosion of the grenade, far from that, it was simply a malfunction of the cartridge-locking mechanism which caused the cartridge not to be fully locked in position in the barrel chamber when fired and which subsequently caused a leak of the combusting propulsion gases out of the barrel -quite spectacular but finally not as dangerous as it looks.
That was not a grenade explosion. There would be no gun, camera or cameraman left. That's kind of hard to do, but can happen and it's known oddly enough as a "catastrophic event". But that's not what you saw.
Quoted comment by fat belly: im sure theres a safer way to load a shell into the gun rather than them shake about ..i bet the shell bounced in backways
THATS TO CATCH THE BRASS, ROUNDS ARE NOT SHAKING ABOUT.

The MK-19 grenades are fed via an ammo belt, which is what you see coming from the right-hand side. After the rounds have been fired the shells are ejected from the left-hand side. What you are seeing are empty shells bouncing around the the empty ammo box which was mounted to catch them.

Hey, even a girl like me knows that!!!
Valerie2007 is 100% correct, this is exactly what happened in the clip. If the actual round had exploded then we would not be viewing this video right now because the submitter would have literally been blown to pieces.

To quote a famous Monty Python line, "RUN AWAY!!!" Damn I'd have shat my pants in that situation. That must have been just the propellant charge.

Projectile doesn't "arm" unless it travels a certain distance.
Poor housekeeping appears to be cause of the malfunction. Looks like some loose brass fouled up the feed.
Mk 19 is a good weapon that dates back to Vietnam. It works.
