THE Right-wing psychopath behind Norway’s bloodbath was involved with the English Defence League, the Sunday Express has learned. Twisted Anders Behring Breivik, who left 92 dead in a co-ordinated bomb and gun rampage, advised the EDL how to stir up anti-Islamic hatred.
He not only admired the far-Right group, but also harboured dreams of setting up Norway’s version to combat the country’s growing Muslim population.
In an email to the Norwegian political website Document.no, Breivik revealed he had discussed tactics with the EDL and another group Stop the Islamification of Europe. He expressed his admiration for the way the EDL provoked overreactions from Islamic youth and Marxists.
“The reaction has been repeatedly shown on the news which has boosted EDL’s ranks,” he said. “I must say I am very impressed with how quickly they have grown but this has to do with smart tactical choice by management.
“EDL is an example and a Norwegian version is the only way to prevent the harassment of Norwegian cultural conservatives from other fronts.” Last night Weyman Bennett, joint secretary of Unite Against Fascism, said: “If the terrorist atrocities in Oslo and Utoya turn out to be the work of neo-Nazis, it wouldn’t be the first time this has happened.
“The Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 was initially blamed on Muslims, but was in fact carried out by the far-Right.” Attempts to contact the EDL leadership in Britain went unanswered last night. Blue-eyed, blond-haired, 32-year-old Breivik is said to be co-operating with police as they try to piece together how he carried out his murderous rampage.
But their most urgent question is: did he carry out his bloody act of terrorism alone?
Finnish psychologist, Dr Rauni-Leena Luukanen-Kilde, who has lived in Norway for 20 years, believes Breivik is unlikely to have been a lone wolf. She said: “An attack of this magnitude would have taken such a degree of planning it would have been virtually impossible for one person to pull off.
“He seems to have been almost brainwashed by either a person or by an ideal.“That is the only way, I believe, he was able to massacre so many people, including children, in cold blood.” Unravelling Breivik’s state of mind will be the detectives’ first task. His Twitter account, which has now been disabled, provides some insight into his thinking.
On July 17 he posted a quote by British philosopher John Stuart Mill, which read: “One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only interests.” His Facebook page, which has also been removed, seems to throw up a few other hints into his mindset. He gives his religious views as Christian and his political persuasion as Conservative.Under sports he reveals a keen interest in bodybuilding and in hunting, which may explain why a series of guns were registered in his name.
He also reveals an interest in freemasonry as well as analysing politics and the stock exchange. He praises Winston Churchill and Right-wing Dutch politician Geert Wilders, whose anti-Islamic views once had him barred from Britain. Breivik’s favourite movies include the blood-soaked historical epics 300 and Gladiator and he likes the US television series Dexter, about a secret serial killer. His taste in video games is equally as violent, Modern Warfare 2 and World Of Warcraft are particular favourites.
His Facebook page photographs show a clean-cut young man with a neat blond fringe, the last person police might suspect of such a horrific killing spree. In some pictures he wears a polo shirt underneath a dark coloured jumper, the American preppy fashion that is popular in Scandinavia. In others he is seen in a dark suit with strange turquoise blue Masonic-style regalia.
One photograph also shows him with two women, most probably his mother and sister. The occasion appears to be his sister’s wedding and he is seen wearing a smart, buttoned shirt and trousers with a garland of white flowers around his neck. Little is known about Breivik’s background, although he is thought to come from a reasonably wealthy middle-class family. That may explain why he appears to have had 600,000 kroner (approximately £72,000) paid into his bank account in 2007.
According to information leaked online, he had a personal fortune of 631,663 kroner despite his yearly income being just 5,223 kroner. The money would have helped him set up his business, Breivik Geofarm, in the small town of Rena, 86 miles north-east of Oslo.
His organic farm produced melons, root vegetables and tubers. Organic farms shy clear of chemicals so his purchase of six tons of fertiliser, the prime ingredient of a basic but effective car bomb, should have alerted the authorities something sinister was brewing. Farming supply company Felleskjopet Agri yesterday confirmed Breivik had placed the order. “These are goods that were delivered on May 4,” Oddny Estenstad, a spokeswoman said without specifying the exact type of fertiliser purchased. “It was six tons of fertiliser, which is a small, normal order for a standard agricultural producer.
“I do not know him or the company, except that it is a company that has contacted us in a normal manner and ordered fertiliser and had it delivered.” Although there were initial reports that Breivik was convicted in 2001 of illegal possession of weapons and explosives, Norwegian police say he had no criminal record.
This meant he had no problem owning his own firearms, a 17-shot Glock pistol,a rifle and shotgun, or being a member of a gun club. Yesterday a young man was arrested for having a knife in his pocket outside a hotel near the shooting scene on Utoya when Norwegian prime minister Jens Stoltenberg visited yesterday. As he was taken into custody, the man told reporters he had the knife “for protection”. The authorities charged Breivik over the double attack yesterday afternoon.
