  • Great idea, lets throw a couple billion at it, we have a lot of unemployed solar panel executives who know how to make taxpayer dollars disappear.

Yup let's through billions of dollars at something that won't work.

Just ask California how well the high-speed train thing is coming along. And it is chock full of proven technology.

    • @Kmanbay Yeah, but this isn't trying to get people out of their cars and on a train. That's the problem with rail travel here in California.People resist change unless it's forced upon them.

  • As an engineer, I am amazed how many people will shoot an idea down from the start. They can dream up infinite ways an idea will fail and not one ounce of energy toward solving those obstacles!

It might not work as planned, it might morph into something different or it might just work if you do not give up before it is started.

    • @GraveMatter- Morph into a FEW Trillion dollars shot down the drain or sent to China--NO THANKS

Innovation leads the way; our moonwalks put you here today, direct and indirectly. If you give up because you might fail, go home and do nothing, and wither on the vine. We are doing that here in America, few of the younger generation pursue engineering and that is bad.

You cannot lead the world flipping hamburgers!

    • @GraveMatter- I agree with you that not a lot of progress has been made since the Television was invented. Everyone sits mindlessly watching it, or smoking pot, or food stamping it. American has no innovation because it became too expensive to do--thus Steel plants are no longer here-among other things. We sent all the bad jobs out. and the EPA bullshit didnt help a thing.
But Obama has wasted a fortune on shit that is a ZERO effect, the Volt is a joke, Solyndra a Joke, and even before him the s More..

Having worked directly with the Russian Space Agency, you could not be further from the truth. The very fact that you appear on LL is in part due to space exploration. There are untold numbers of spinoff that have occurred because of R&D in the space industry. I am sure you have a cell phone with GPS, well; satellites are wholly the result of space. Come on, you are being narrow in your thinking, just because we have not gone to mars does not validate your argument.

    • @GraveMatter- Actually I dont have anything with GPS, I have no need to be tracked via satellite. What I mean was Earthlings have not really done a lot since the 50's. The Net will not last, and as I said all this time, and we have yet to put anyone on Mars, or even be able to increase speeds of space flight. A car is still a car, we still use Oil, no real advances have been made by mankind.

  • Stumble out of a bar , turn the key , car warns other drivers to watch out for crazy drunk swerving around.
Lights in the road detect erratic driving , over ride operators control.
Pull off to the side of the road , lock doors , alert police.

Ex girlfriend stalking you , wearing diapers and NASA badge , road hears audio of psycho bitch mumbling to herself , sends text message to you and authority's , engages antilock brakes and complementary punch in the mouth with airbag , problem solved.

  • Stop regulating oil! Lift all those crappy taxes.

  • That's great and all, but cities will now need a team of people washing the road all the time so it can actually get enough light to make energy.

  • Some great ideas here...

Minus the driving on glass part.
Sounds like fun in the rain and snow....

    • @newton i'm not convinced glass gives you the same traction as tarmac. at all.

    • @7ShadesofSunday
Glass alone doesn't but it's far from impossible to texture glass or make a glass-like substance that does.

    • @lucidx1

But wouldn't textured glass reduce the efficiency of the solar cells?

      Posted Sep-18-2012 By

    • @WolfBite120
They even said in this video that they need to darken the glass so that there isn't massive glare being reflected off the road. The point is wide spread distribution not compact efficiency. Sure they would need more roads like this due to the reduced efficiency to create traction and avoid sun glare, but that doesn't make it impossible, just a bit more expensive and time consuming.

    • @lucidx1 true, but surely over time it'd polish from the friction of tyres? even some road surfaces can end up slippery like mirrors, especially in hot places

  • Not feasible : too expensive. - Signed MSEE.

Removing "roads" does not eliminate automobile pollution. This video is sort of saying : cut back on fries but keep the quarter pounder.

    Au contraire :

Extensive train networks : all major cities in the world have excellent train connections, except in the US (except NYC).

Blue sky: investigate cheap personalized air mobiles powered by hydrogen. MUCH better : no pollution, no extensive infrastructure costs. AND feasible.
