Turkish military F-4 plane 'vanishes' near Syria border

Turkey's military says it has lost contact with one of its aircraft over the sea close to the border with Syria.

Turkish media said the plane, an F-4 jet, crashed in Syria or Syrian territorial waters.

The two crew-members were found alive, CNN Turk and the Hurriyet daily said.

Radio and radar contact were lost after the plane took off from an airbase in Malatya province on Friday morning, a statement from the Turkish armed forces said.

Malatya governor Ulvi Saran told the state-run Anatolia news agency there were two pilots on the aircraft.

Earlier, eyewitnesses in the northern Syrian town of Latakia told BBC Arabic that Syrian air defences shot down an unidentified aircraft near the town of Ras al-Baseet.

Relations between Turkey and Syria, once close allies, have deteriorated sharply since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011.

Turkey is sheltering more than 32,000 refugees from Syria, according tofigures published on Friday by the UN refugee agency UNHCR.

  • F-4 was a sweet ass plane back in the 60's. I'm surprised Turkey is still using them. If I remember correctly they have lots of F-15 and F-16 from US sales.

      - I called it fake from the beginning. It`s incredible how many people will believe a story when absolutely zero proof was presented.

How the hell is it fake when the Syrian state run news agency SANA admits to shooting it down? *facepalm*

  • There were 2 F-4E's either 2020 terminators or RF-4's (most probably) flying in Syrian airspace. One was shot down (confirmed)in syrian waters, the other one was damaged but managed to return to its base (unconfirmed). Reports state that S-300pmu2 a/a missiles were used by the syrians (also unconfirmed, but most probable).

      - Confirmed be who? Reports? What reports would that be? "also unconfirmed, but most probable". "Most probable"? By who`s assertion?
      - Your comment is full of holes, and you present nothing to back it up. You are looking like a paid troll.

Relax there buddy, the Turks have confirmed that one of their jets went down and it was an f-4.
There was no reason to send an f-4 in that area and not a more sophisticated warplane (f-16) unless it was to be used for aerial photography, that's why "most probably" the downed plane was an recon RF-4.
The "reports" stating that there were two fighters and the other one was damaged came from Al Mayadeen News Agency in Lebanon, known to have close ties with Iran More..

      - Sorry, Bro! I'm calm now. Haha. Nice reply, btw. I jumped the gun on this one. The story about the defecting Syrian fighter pilot, also seems to be gaining some credibility, which initially, I thought was propaganda. It's hard sometimes, to sort the truth from the propaganda, especially when it comes from LLers, like CptSpaulding. Cheers!

      - Don't be gullible! Not one bit of proof was shown, regarding the defecting Syrian fighter pilot, and this story, so far, reeks of the same! Pure propaganda!

  • Today: Turkish Fighter Plane goes missing.

Tomorrow: Send in the UN, Syria using it's air force against the civilian population.
