North Korea has test-fired a number of short range missiles according to South Korea.
Analysts believe the military exercise is intended to send out two messages:
Firstly, that Pyongyang is unhappy with the United States, after Washington applied pressure on North Korea to detail its uranium enrichment programme and the extent of its links to Syria.
Secondly, that its thought the test was a dig at the new conservative government in Seoul.
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said he wants to end the free ride given to North Korea under 10-years of left-leaning presidents who handed its neighbour billions of euros in aid while demanding little in return.
Lee's government has not ruled out investing in the North, providing the North strips down its nuclear arms programme and returns more than 1,000 South Koreans it kidnapped and kept in the country after the 1950-53 Korean war.
