Many have viewed the "Alone in the Wilderness" video, which shows how Dick Proenneke built his own cabin in Alaska, alone and with only hand-tools. You may have wondered what his cabin looked like inside, this video shows how Proenneke lived. The video was made by someone who visited the cabin in 2008. Proenneke donated the cabin to the State of Alaska after his death and it is now a tourist attraction.
Born in 1917 in Iowa, Proenneke decided to live a life of solitude in the Twin Lakes area of Alaska, 40 miles from civilization, and so he built this cabin in 1967. He lived there for over 30 years, until the hard Alaskan winters and his advanced age made him decide to finally leave the cabin in 1999. He died in 2003.

It isn't correct that he waned to live in solitude as he had a regular schedule of visitors.

really cool of you to share this video. I have always respected Dick Proenneke. I seen the video on PBS of corse they cut allot out because the only time PBS shows anything cool is when they Hosting their Begathon.
and offer the programs for sail at Very large sums of money and they chop a good deal of the show out so they have a selling point. but when they are not begging for money the programing goes back to Useless bullshit.

No way he built that alone otherwise he must've had like some crane to lift some of those logs or have been one huge paul bunyan look-a-like.

The logs are from spuce trees which are relatively light for their size. Heres a short video of him building his cabin. Pretty cool to see. I may have to but the whole thing now after seeing this.
