@khamomil I remember reading in the WSJ that there were a few hundred cell phones installed in cars in NYC before the towers were even functioning. Status.

LOL, the good old days. My first mobile phone came in a briefcase & you had to go through a mobile operator. Then cell phones came out & they were absolutely tiny in comparison (bout the size of a lunchbox) :@)

The coolest phone in the 80's was the carphone Sonny Crockett used in his Alfa Romeo Spider.

When I bought my briefcase phone in 84, the combination latches were 007 LOL. Damn thing sounded like a CB radio on the other end. :@)
I can't recall what Sonny had, may have been the same style.

Hahaha I remember when we had these! My stepfather had one in a leather case with zippers. The phone rang, hurry up find a spot to put the phone-purse down, zip-zip-zip it open, and say Hello before the caller gives up. I remember thinking "Yeah, that's my dad! He's a badass, we're so high class." when I was around 8 years old.

The batteries lasted about 20 minutes usage time. The costs were so high on a "per minute" rate that was tremendous. The tower coverage was minimal and back then they were privately owned. They could charge you roaming fees that were for example, 15 bucks per minute.
The "brick" phone was worse than the bag phone because of wattage.

@tat2d 20 minutes on a battery? How much extra did you have to pay for that? :-)

@TMoray1 The damned things were as heavy as a motorcycle battery!
The Army issued these kinds of phones to Command personnel for a short time, and went back to radios and pagers. ha ha
I had a brick phone in around 84 because of being away from home all the time. It cost me something like $1.50 a minute, plus roaming fees that were criminal.

@tat2d No tower hand offs when driving down the road. The call just dropped and you had to make a new call from the new tower. I still owe somebody about $5 for roaming charges on two partial calls totaling about 4 minutes 20 years ago.

@TMoray1 Ha ha! I got nailed before the Government regulated towers in Elk Horn, NC. 15 freaking dollars a minute for roaming charges for 4 minutes! I about shit.
