CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has arrested an 18-year-old man in connection to a shooting that left one person dead at a Waffle House near Johns Island this past weekend.

Deputies charged Deonte Steven Brown with attempted murder. Brown turned himself over to detectives on Monday.

Investigators say Brown was involved in an altercation with an 18-year-old man inside the Waffle House at 3565 Savannah Hwy early Sunday morning.

An incident report states that Brown pulled a gun and fired a shot that hit the 18-year-old victim, then left the scene.

The Charleston County Coroner confirmed that another man, 19-year-old Dontaye Reed of Ravenel, died as a result of gunshot wounds he received during the incident. The sheriff's office says the investigation into the circumstances of Reed's death is continuing.

At 4:15 a.m., deputies responded to the Waffle House in reference to a shooting and found the 18-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to his upper torso area. The victim said that the suspect came into the restaurant and asked him for a cigarette.

According to the victim, when he told the suspect he didn't have one, the suspect became angry and began cursing at him.

The victim said that the suspect and several other males then circled him with one of them throwing a red cup at his face. The victim said that the suspect then punched him in the face as he was attempting to leave the restaurant.

An incident report states that as the victim was leaving through the front door, he saw the suspect lift his shirt, pull a gun from his waist band and fired a single shot, which hit the victim.


Major Jim Brady said deputies arrived on scene to find Reed with fatal gunshots wounds and the 18-year-old victim with life-threatening gunshot wounds. Brady also said a third person received minor injuries after falling inside the restaurant during the shooting.

Witnesses also reported that shots were exchanged between people inside the restaurant and the shooter, who was standing outside, Brady said.

All victims were taken to MUSC.
