It's gonna happen soon - one small piece of debris hits a satellite at 28000 Km/h, and destroys it.
The impact creates hundreds more pieces of debris that will also hit other satellites/debris creating thousands more.
You get the idea!
It's gonna start raining space debris everywhere down here.
Ok, most of the junk will burn up on re-entry, but a lot won't (remember Skylab?).
I'll bet diamonds to a pinch of Chinese excreta that several kilos of metal hitting you from space will cause a nasty graze on your noggin!
It's not a matter of if, it's definately a when scenario.
It won't bother me if I don't get hit?
No, but think of the head scratching of the civilised world when their cellphones suddenly stop working (it's not all ground based repeaters), and they can't get ESBN on the TV, or any other channel for that matter.
World markets will be in panic with no info from other markets etc etc.
Bet this's cheered you all up on LL :-)
there's an agency who track the (detectable) space junk, and they are watching 25,000 pices as we speak (those paint flecks won't be detected, but will cause significant damage at 28000 km/h).
There's a picture on :
http://www.thespacereview.com/article/1373/1
that shows a real picture of what's up there at the moment.
I guess "space debris" could technically include aliens and their crafts? So.... we are not really being lied to? Feel better? Look away, nothing to see here. Move along, get back to work folks. Remember Jesus is watching.

Protip: this is not a free floating debris. U didnt get the video, but that's a nice explaination.
This video is obviously showing an object that is changing direction (at an angle), is radiating, and seems to go around the curve of the earth (not into earth).
time for some tinfoil hats
but on a serious note...do they think ppl are that stupid to look at a video like this and say "YA THATS RIGHT IT LOOKS LIKE FLAKES FROM A HANDRAIL"
Quoted comment by War_On_Errorism: if you pan a camera left and right while filming me against a backdrop with no reference point i too can be made to appear as changing direction..
The most intelligent explanation here. Thanks.
Oh, and things in space tumble and move around, which explains the "flashing" light.
