Fire helicopters, desperate for water during California wildfires, refilling their water tanks from the lake at the ninth hole of the TPC Valencia Golf Course.
Its a miracle these companies can keep the Sky Cranes up- last one was built in 1967...parts must be a real beeeatch, or, they had Sikorsky retool, and start knocking them out again. Was interesting to see LA Fire with Blackhawks...thats yaŽll Homeland Security dollars at work...thing is, a Hawk (in my humble 4,000 hr. opinion) haul enough water to make a difference...so why bother?
hmm dont wild fires happen once every couple years, if not every year?
id be more impressed if people built their buildings somewhere they didnt need rescued
Quoted comment by Tree_Hugger: I wonder how many golf balls those copters sucked up along with the water?
I was thinking the same thing...
As to the others: "Hovering a helicopter is like balancing a unicycle on a basketball" - i think I read this in Chickenhawk by Robert Mason. Shit-hot pilots and machines... hope all can be safe.

I remember fueling one of these skycranes... the fuel fitting is about 6 or so feet in the air... truly a huge bird when you stand next to it.

Actually the fireman report that they get fish falling out of them and cooked all the time.
Yummm wildfire fish
There once was a scuba diver sucked up by a fire plane. He was found in full diving rig in a burned forest. Took em a while to work out what happened.
That's an urban legend you putz
Awesome heli pilots
No, it's true. My Dad found him while out walking the dog...
