Spike Lee bashes US report on vanished Gulf oil

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Filmmaker Spike Lee is calling a "lie" a U.S. government report that 75 percent of the spilled Gulf Coast oil is gone.

Speaking to a meeting of the Television Critics Association on Saturday, Lee said journalists should expose what he called the real story. He argued that it's unlikely that "abracadabra, presto chango" the vast majority of the oil has vanished from Gulf of Mexico waters and coastal wetlands.

Federal scientists said last week that nearly three-quarters of the oil has been removed by various artificial or natural means, but that the spill's effect on wildlife will long continue.

Lee was promoting his new documentary about New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. "If God is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise," a follow-up to his 2006 film about the hurricane, debuts Aug. 23 and 24 on HBO.

  • Is he saying, "Obama lied, the gulf died?"

    • You know what's funny mm? They failed sooo spectacularly in predicting the impact of this spill. But, they can tell us what temperature it will be in 2050? Are you f'n kidding me?

Remember after Katrina, ManBearPig was screaming about how next year was going to be the WORST-HURRICANE-SEASON-EVER, and it turned out to be one of the mildest hurricane seasons in recorded history. I believe there was only a single storm large enough to get a name, and it didn't turn in to anything.

  • Yeah, he's an idiot. Old news. A racist twerp who sits on his yacht blubbering and crying about how impossible it is for a black person to be successful.

    • I'm not a fan of the guy by any stretch, but do you honestly believe the assertion that 75% of the oil dumped into the gulf has vanished, and that things are pretty much back to normal for the gulf wetlands and ocean life in that area?

Nearly 20 years after the Exxon Valdez spill,
scientists from the University of North Carolina stated that the effects have lasted far longer than expected, and that it could take up to 30 years for some shoreline Arctic habitats to recover.

    • Actually yes buddy. It's reality... If you go back and review the doomsday fanatics who drove the hysteria, you'll realize that none of them are geologists. The people driving the hysteria were celebs, and actors, and political pundits and political news commentators. Denis Prager had a guest on who actually worked in that field, geology and bio-chemistry. etc. He said that everybody in the community of people who actually know what they're talking about, were saying all along that microbes will More..

    • Interesting, and yeah, I did just research a couple of different independent articles stating that much of the oil has disappeared via evaporation, oil eating microbes, etc. An environmental engineer at Johns Hopkins was one source. I actually hope this is the case, and it seems like it just might be, so I appreciate your feedback.

I think it's a bit of a stretch though to assume that the University of North Carolina scientists who reported on the Valdez have an agenda or are inaccurate. I w More..

    • Well that last bit was hardly fair. I didn't say they were wrong, did I? I said I didn't know, I would see corroboration, and that you can't trust that they're objective. You can see where they would get bias from, but maybe you like to pretend it isn't significant. See if you have the integrity to address these couple common sense and logical points that I'd like to make?

      1) Scientists who are interested in being published, are inherently biased toward having something dramatic to print. Who More..

    • You're right, the last part of my statement was a low blow. I'd take that back if possible...

I actually agree with you. We should examine motive and source before getting fully behind anything, and yes, people (particularly the weak minded) are quick to jump on board the daily cause without even knowing what or who they are supporting. It is a shame however that Al Gore won't be on trial at some point for perpetrating such fraud. At the least, he should have to return his Nobel Prize. Fun More..

  • A "U.S. government report" is from the Obama administration. He's calling it a lie?

  • I'm glad someone who has decades of experience in marine biology and hazardous waste cleanup could offer their opinion... oohhh wait... this is Spike Lee, a professional race baiter, welfare warrior, and uneducated moron. When is this loser going to suffocate on his crack pipe and help cleanse our dirty gene pool?

  • Who cares how much money he has. People in Golly-wood live in guilded cages, afraid of becoming adults for fear of losing their star power.

  • Yeah Haji, he's another ultra rich liberal who made a career describing the evils of achievement and success and wealth. Only children like you are suckered by it anymore.

  • Exxon Valdez was a spill. What happened in the Gulf was an experiment. Why will nobody acknowledge this??
