US Navy Holds 6 Suspected Pirates After Battle

U.S. warship captured six suspected pirates Saturday after a battle off the Horn of Africa — the Navy's third direct encounter with seafaring bandits in less than two weeks.

The Navy has taken at least 21 suspected pirates since March 31 in the violence-plagued waters off Somalia and nearby regions, where U.S. warships are part of an international anti-piracy flotilla.

A statement by the U.S. Navy said the suspected pirates began shooting at the amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland just before dawn about 380 miles (610 kilometers) off Djibouti, a small nation facing Yemen across the mouth of the Red Sea.

The Navy said the Ashland returned fire and the suspected pirate skiff was destroyed. All six people on board were rescued and taken aboard the Ashland.

The Ashland suffered no injuries or damage in the second recent attack on a U.S. warship by suspected pirates.

  • I wonder if these guys will gat a cool patch for doing this...you know, a skull and crossbones patch or something...lol. That would be something to talk about when you're a grandpa. "You know, in my day, when we were fighting the pirates..."

  • The story would have been much better had the skiff been destroyed, and there were no survivors.

  • These "pirates" should be put to death. The risk/reward quotient needs to go way up for this filth.

There of course is legal precident for hanging this filth, and those laws should be revisited.

Swift justice will go a long way to ending this bullshit. And this filth is simply costing the global society too much money for their continued existence.

  • Better turn them loose pretty quick. Won't be long
before people start accusing the Navy of war crimes
for holding these fine men, who were just out for
a spin in their boat, taken captive, and detained on
trumped up charges. The u.n. will prolly get involved
    too. Cheers
