The Z-40, and emerges as sole leader of "Los Zetas"

With the death of Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, founder and leader of Los Zetas, Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, alias The Z-40, is seen as the successor to the Lazca amid an internal division of the cartel, which emerged in the late nineties .



The Z-40, also known as El Judas, began his criminal career with The Texas band dedicated to robbery and drug dealing in the United States, later to join the Gulf cartel in 1999 and become one of the trusted men of Osiel Cardenas Guillen in Tamaulipas.

Thus was formed the group Los Zetas, the armed wing of the Gulf Cartel, under the command of Arturo Guzmán Decena, aka The Z-1 who joined The Lazca, also known as the Z-3 and the executioner.

In 2002, Guzmán Decena is killed during a firefight in Matamoros, leaving Lazcano Lazcano as leader of the criminal group, expanding its power with El-Z40 in the north of the country.
