British prisoners report ill treatment in Israeli jail

A message smuggled out of the Ramla Givon prison in an email from members of the solidarity boat crew arrested earlier this week has accused the Israeli authorities of maltreatment and keeping them in poor conditions.

Amongst those being held is Adie Mormech, 30, from Rusholme in Manchester.

21 solidarity activists on board the FreeGaza boat Spirit of Humanity were taken prisoner by the Israeli navy after they attempted to take humanitarian aid to Gaza from Cyprus on Monday. Their boat was surrounded by 6 Israeli warships and the crew and passengers forcibly removed. Information received by former USCongresswoman Cynthia McKinney suggests that two of the women prisoners have already been released.

All of the prisoners have stressed that although their fate has become the subject of an international news story, that of the 11,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails has not been given the same attention. They also reiterate that their fate is only partof the wider story of the Israeli blockade on Gaza.

The full text of the email received by British supporters at around noon on Thursday 2nd July is as follows:

“sending this fortuitously, could pass this on to relevant contacts pls thx 02/06/09 Now at Ramla prison, Givon, separated from arab and aljazeera passengers, after being kidnapped by Israeli special forces supported by 6 navy gunships in Palestinian waters 18 miles off the Gaza coast. Unaware of the status of 2 Palestinian Israeli citizens separated on arrest. 4 British nationals including the Captain of the Spirit of Humanity Denis Healey and Adie Mormech, Ishmahil Blagrove and Fathi Jaouadi are being held in the high security Ramla Givon prison where they are also holding former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney who was also on board the boat. Conditions at the prison are appalling, 14-20 to a cell measuring 7m by 7m. Nobel

  • Has there ever been a "prisoner" who enjoyed their stay? It sucks when your a criminal.

    Maybe they would rather Israel just blow them out of the water for aiding terrorist. Better yet they could just go to Egypt and bypass the Israelis all together.....Oh wait.....Egypt thinks they are terrorist and criminals too. I guess the writer forgot to mention that fact.

  • The Israeli papers reported this morning that Huweda Araf complained that she has to sleep with cockroaches.

    Given that she's married to Adam Shapiro, I thought she would be used to sleeping with cockroaches by now.

    If they are in "Palestinian waters " then international laws have NO relevance. Most countries recognize 12 miles as the territorial boundary.     • Yep it's murky alright... Gaza was originally meant to have about 30 miles. These days they get shot at by Israeli gunboats whenever they venture out more than 5 miles off their coast. There's huge gas reserves about 25 miles from their coast & Israel has signed deals to drill it even though it belongs to the people of Gaza. It's a bloody mess.

    • I'm sure she must have meant they stopped them 18 miles off the Gaza coast, preventing them from entering Palestinian waters. The message certainly appears to be rushed, and when rushing people occasionally make errors.

      "Hostis humani generis" was meant for dealing with pirates and slave traders and the like, and literally means 'enemy of mankind' - as in they are an enemy to vessels or peoples of any nationality on the high seas.

    • Well I don't know. I'm no expert on the legislation - on the FreeGaza website (the organisation that were trying to get thru the blockade) they said international waters so I assumed that was the case.
