The trial has opened in northeastern France of self-confessed serial killer Michel Fourniret. His wife, Monique Olivier, is also on trial, charged with one count of murder and four of complicity. The court will hear how Fourniret, assited by his wife who helped lure the victims, raped and murdered seven young women in France and Belgium over a 16-year period.
Dubbed the "Ogre of the Ardennes", Fourniret has admitted that he needed to go hunting for a virgin at least twice a year.
The couple's killing spree came to an end in 2003 when a 13-year-old girl whom he tried to abduct in Belgium managed to escape and raise the alarm.
Members of the victims' family and two women who survived attempts to kidnap them are to testify in the trial that is expected to last two months.
